Catherine Breillat

Filmmaker, Novelist

Catherine Breillat (n. 1948, Bressuire) is a filmmaker and novelist. She published her first novel, L’Homme facile, at the age of 17, before making her directorial debut with A Real Young Girl (1976), an adaptation of her own novel that remained unreleased for more than two decades. Her films have repeatedly drawn attention for their frank depictions of sexuality and their refusal to abide by conventional cinematic and moral codes. Romance (1999), which features unsimulated sex scenes, provoked considerable controversy and brought renewed attention to the boundaries between eroticism and pornography on screen. Before directing her own films, Breillat appeared in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris (1972) and wrote the screenplay for Maurice Pialat’s Police (1985). At the 20th LEFFEST, her Anatomy of Hell (2004) will be screened, followed by a conversation with the director.
