Bette Gordon is a director and independent filmmaker best known for her film VARIETY (1984), a beautifully seductive film about voyeurism and pornography. LUMINOUS MOTION (2000) was produced by Ted Hope and Anthony Bregman, it opened theatrically at The Angelica Cinema in New York City, and stars Deborah Kara Unger in a breathtaking performance. Gordon's 2010 film, HANDSOME HARRY, premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and opened theatrically to rave reviews at The IFC in NYC and The Sunset 5 in Los Angeles. The film features a stellar ensemble cast including Steve Buscemi,, Aidan Quinn, Campbell Scott, John Savage, and Jamey Sheridan. Her current film THE DROWNING is a suspense thriller based on the novel Border Crossing by award winning British author Pat Barker. The film stars Josh Charles, Julia Stiles, and Avan Jogia. Gordon's films have been shown in international festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Locarno, Sao Paulo, Warsaw, and Tribeca.
Her early short films, most notably EMPTY SUITCASES, won numerous awards and festival acclaim worldwide, including screenings at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Biennial, as well as prizes as The Chicago International Film Festival and Atlanta Festival of Film and Video. Her short film GREED, starring Kate Valk from the Wooster Group and produced by ZDF German Television, was part of an omnibus film called “Seven Women Seven Sins” including contributions from Chantal Akerman (France), Helke Sanders (Germany), and Valie Export (Austria). Gordon’s films are in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum, The British Film Institute Collection, The Centre Georges Pompidou and MoMA.
