Inside the thick walls of a prison, a voyeuristic guard takes pleasure in the confinement of his prisoners. Two of them, infatuated by one another and in desperate need of physical contact, find imaginative ways to mutually express their desire. This experimental black and white short is French novelist Jean Genet’s only cinematic work. Banned for its explicit homosexual content at the time it was made, A Song of Love is one of the first existing pieces depicting the erotic sensuality of same-sex passion. A universal milestone for the sexual emancipation of the big screen and a stark contemplation on interior and exterior confinements still relevant today.
