An investigator from the War Crimes Commission arrives in a small Connecticut town to track down a former Nazi who has reinvented himself as a respected university professor, engaged to the daughter of a Supreme Court justice. As the investigation unfolds, the veneer of American respectability begins to crack, exposing a society in which the perpetrators of wartime atrocities may find refuge behind the very institutions that embody authority.
