T.J. Ballantyne is the owner of the "Old Oak," a pub facing financial difficulties and serving as the only gathering place for residents of a once-thriving mining community. When a group of Syrian refugees arrive in the village, T.J. strikes up an unexpected relationship with Yara, a young refugee. This friendship develops despite the tensions and prejudices in their community. In an interview about his latest film, Ken Loach reflected on the motivation behind his work: "The main question is: why do you tell the story? [...] It is about finding characters that have a simple story, but they shed light on the tensions in society and on the reality of what is happening [...]. If you choose the right story, you see right to the heart of how the world works”.
