In a Copenhagen suburb, a commune of young people sets out to challenge bourgeois conventions by embracing their “inner idiot”, performing physical and mental disabilities in public. When Karen, a reserved newcomer carrying a painful secret, joins them, the group’s radical experiment begins to reveal its own contradictions. Lars von Trier’s provocative Dogme 95 film tests the boundaries between performance and reality, freedom and constraint, transgression and vulnerability.
