In a Kyrgyz village, an ancient tradition is still practiced: the parents of a large family offer a newborn to a childless couple to raise as their own, a ritual called Beshkempir (which translates as “five grandmothers”). The baby is Azate, raised by his adoptive parents without knowing his origins, until adolescence confronts him with the stigma of being adopted. A film of the new wave of Kyrgyz cinema after the independence of the USSR.
