Venice, spring 1866, in the final days of the Austrian occupation. A troubled and neurotic Italian countess betrays her country, jeopardizing her marriage and political principles, by engaging in a torrid love affair with an Austrian lieutenant. It is the tragic and self-destructive romance, according to Luchino Visconti, filmed in lush Technicolor, accentuating the lines of operatic melodrama, in a sensual evocation of irresponsible emotions.
