Rostropovich, one of the greatest Russian cellists of the 20th century, who died in 2007, was forced to flee his country in 1972 for defending writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn who had been expelled from the USSR for having published The Gulag Archipelago. The extraordinary story of his life is revealed in this film through a collection of rare archives and testimonies from his family and friends, assembled by Bruno Monsaingeon.
