The banks of the Rio do Ouro are the setting for a winding story of crossed loves. Carolina is consumed with jealousy as her husband António grows close to his niece Mélita, whom he rescued from the river and feels attracted to. A clairvoyant gypsy, Zé dos Ouros, reveals visions of past lives and bloody crimes, becoming involved with Carolina. Conceived in the 1960s, following The Green Years and Change of Life, River of Gold was reborn three decades later.
