There was a crooked man

Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Joseph Leo Mankiewicz was an American director and producer born in Pennsylvania in 1909. He followed his writing career under the influence of his older brother, Herman J. Mankiewicz.

Having a 40-year career in Hollywood, he worked for seventeen years as a screenwriter for Paramout Pictures, one of the leading film studios in the United States.

His film All about Eve (1950) was nominated for several awards, having been awarded 14 nominations at the 1951 Academy Awards and winner in the categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. The film also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay in 1951.

During his career, he made films of various genres, from musicals, Guys and Dolls (1955), to westerns with the film There was a crooked man (1970). In 1987, Joseph L. Mankiewicz won a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in honor of his career.
