The Piano was a surprising film on several levels. It was from the get-go the underdog, with B-list Actors and disdained by some as a chick-flick. But this story of a mute Scottish woman (played by the extraordinary Holly Hunter) who, in the 19th century, is sent to New Zealand along with her daughter and a cherished piano for an arranged marriage to a wealthy farmer, quickly became a phenomenon, conquering audiences around the world and numerous awards, including three Oscars (two of them in prestigious, central categories), with Holly Hunter snatching the one for best actress and Jane Campion the one for best original screenplay.
