In the celebrated filmography of Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, Mon Cas reveals a work of ultimate creativity and innovation. Based on José Régio’s theatre play of the same name, as well as in Beckett and the Book of Job, the film presents four versions of the story: through the perspective of a theatre play, as a silent film, as a film of the 1950s and finally through a biblical philosophical perspective. In this tribute to the art of cinema, the film evokes the multiplicity and endlessness of the narrative form and its symbiotic relationship to one of its precursors: the theatre.
