Feeling trapped by fame and an unhappy marriage, Andrei Gorchakov, a Russian poet, sets out in search of his cultural past in Italy, where he investigates the life of an 18th-century compatriot composer to write the libretto for an opera. He travels through Tuscany with Eugenia, his Italian interpreter, and an encounter with Domenico, a seemingly lunatic old man, ultimately allows the writer to understand the secret of his own nostalgia.
