Cinemax Special Screening: Short Films by Ana Rocha de Sousa

Cecília is the only teacher on a small fishing island. Her daughter, Maria, decides to go to the beach on a misty morning to wait for the arrival of her father’s boat. She never returns.  At Sea deals with the grief and guilt of a woman whose daughter appears to have been engulfed by the incomprehensible powers of the sea. This moving drama is Portuguese filmmaker Ana Rocha de Sousa’s final graduation project from the London Film School, an impressive work that pushed her into a critically acclaimed career as a director, upon having been an actress for several years. With a devotion to the melancholic aroma of the colour blue, this film paints the sea with a story about motherhood and the fragility of life.
