Alberto Rodríguez was born in Seville in 1971. He studied image and sound at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the University of Seville. In 1997, he released his first short film, Bancos, co-directed with Santi Amodeo, which won several awards. In 2000, still sharing directing and screenwriting credits with Amodeo, he made his feature film debut with The Pilgrim Factor, for which he received a Special Mention for Best New Director at the San Sebastián Film Festival. This was followed by his solo work, The Suit (2002), 7 Virgins (2005) – the latest a working-class drama that established him as one of the most promising names in Spanish cinema – and in 2012, Unit 7 resulted in 16 Goya nominations (two won by actors Joaquín Núñez and Julián Villagrán). With a foot in television, where he has directed a few series episodes, he continues to stand out in cinema with productions such as the acclaimed Marshland (2014), which earned him the Goyas for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, in addition to other recognitions at the San Sebastián Film Festival; Smoke & Mirrors (2016); and Prison 77 (2022). Confirming his dexterity for thrillers is the most recent Los Tigres (2025), being presented at LEFFEST.
