The young Angustias was born in the early 1900’s in the southern Mexican state of Morelos, daughter of a generous bandit. Throughout her life, she faced discrimination for being a woman, an orphan, Black, and illiterate. After stabbing a man who attempted to rape her, she fled to the mountains and joined the Zapatistas. As a colonel, the young woman tried to uphold her father's ideals, promoting justice for women and peasants.
