La Commune (Paris, 1871)

On a stage-like set, two hundred non-actors recreate the events and atmosphere of the Paris Commune, the citizens' revolt against the French monarchical government that occurred in 1871. Two perspectives are offered: an official view by Versailles Television and that of the rebels via “la télévision communale”. Peter Watkins's monumental masterwork audaciously mixes past and present to debunk the notion that history is available through a singular representation.
