After being evicted from his shelter in a cellar, a homeless man takes his own life. Orsolya, the bailiff responsible, struggles with guilt through a series of failed attempts... Blending drama and comedy, Kontinental ‘25 dissects themes such as the housing crisis, post-socialist economics, nationalism, and the power of language. Inspired by Roberto Rossellini’s Europa ’51, yet made as a modest indie production, it portrays a protagonist unable to find understanding – an unsetling reflect of a contemporary malaise.

Berlin International Film Festival 2025 – Silver Bear for Best Screenplay

Radu Jude

Born in 1977, Radu Jude is one of the most acclaimed Romanian filmmakers of today. He studied film directing in Bucharest and began his career as an assistant director for Cristi Puiu. In 2006, he directed the short film The Tube with a Hat, which received international acclaim. His first feature film, The Happiest Girl in the World (2009), was selected to compete at over 50 international film festivals. In 2016, he made his theatrical directing debut with a stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage. His film Aferim! (2015) won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, and Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021) earned the Golden Bear at the same festival. At Locarno Film Festival, Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (2023) earned him the Special Jury Prize. Straddling the lines between fiction and documentary, both short and long-form, Radu Jude continues to create unusual cinema, a prime example of which is his recent Dracula (2025), featuring zombies. This edition of LEFFEST presents one of his latest films, Kontinental '25, which examines the housing crisis and contemporary society.
