Shifting the gaze through which we view the so-called "refugee crisis," Io Capitano tells the story of a young Senegalese boy on his odyssey to a mythical Europe. From Dakar to the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea aboard an overcrowded boat, facing the hostility of the desert and the cruelty of detention centres in Libya, the viewer is taken on an authentic epic journey where the desire for freedom and a better life emerges as the driving force. Profoundly impactful, the film was selected to compete at the Venice Film Festival, where Matteo Garrone won the Silver Lion for Best Director and Seydou Sarr's remarkable debut in cinema earned him the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor.
