Critical Zone follows the wanderings of Amir and his dog in the underworld of Tehran. Living a solitary life, Amir roams aimlessly while trafficking drugs and helping tormented souls, like a prophet of modern times. The drugs, which he also consumes, serve as an escape from a city without a future, but where he eventually finds the seeds of resistance. Filmed at night and in complete secrecy, in the months leading up to the protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the Iranian morality police, Ali Ahmadzadeh's film is a portrait of a generation cornered and on the verge of revolt, an anthem to resistance and freedom. Despite pressure from Iranian authorities to withdraw it from the Locarno Film Festival, the film was screened and won the Golden Leopard.
