During World War I, Pierre — a soldier newly arrived at the battlefield and eager to prove his worth — meets Francis, another soldier who is trying to lift his comrades' spirits with a theatre show. Piercing the violence with a ray of tenderness, Coward questions the nature of courage in a generation exposed to war.
