Carandiru is a journey into the intimacy of the inmates of São Paulo's most notorious prison, Brazil. The stories they tell to the prison doctor, in a surprisingly light way, are like tales full of humanity, despair, love, betrayal, revenge, and hope. But this genuineness disappears when viewers and inmates confront the extremely violent and inhumane reality of the prison, governed by its own codes... The film was shot in the prison of the same name, where a massacre took place on October 2, 1992, the largest in the history of the Latin American prison system, resulting in the murder of 111 men by the Military Police.
