Following the accidental death of their son, a grieving couple retreats to a cabin in the woods, seeking to heal their pain and their marriage. Nature soon becomes a threatening force, and pain and desire drive their relationship into an abyss of madness. Lars von Trier portrays grief as a state of physical and psychological disintegration, in a radical hybrid of psychodrama, horror and allegory.
