The tradition of French film noir (Jacques Becker, Jean-Pierre Melville, etc.) is revisited and transformed in this collaboration between Hal Hartley and actress Isabelle Huppert. Amateur intersects a former nun turned erotic writer with an amnesiac man wandering the streets of New York: as they uncover his identity, other colorful characters enter the scene, in a stylish tangle of sex, violence, and love.
