40 Days of Silence

Saodat Ismailova

Original title: Chilla

The young Bibicha takes a 40-day vow of silence in her aunt’s house to atone for her sins. The space, set in an Uzbek village, is inhabited by several generations of women from the same family, where men continue to shape their lives even in their absence. The similarity of their fates seems to blur different times and customs, in a work that explores silence, tradition, and the strength that sustains women in a patriarchal society.
