LEFFEST organizes a flamenco music concert featuring some of today’s greatest artists: Josemi Carmona and his trio with guest artist Pepe Habichuela, with a second part by Farruquito.
Pepe Habichuela is considered one of the last living legends of the golden age of flamenco, acclaimed by critics as dance and song’s best accompanying guitarist. Having worked with Camáron, Paco de Lucía, Enrique Morente, Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera, Pepe Marchena and many more, nowadays Pepe is mainly respected and invited as a soloist, and like all the greats that came before him, his every touch and movement is respected and eagerly absorbed by the new generation.
Josemi Carmona, a member of the famous Habichuela dynasty, is the son of Pepe Habichuela. As guitarists and composers, flamenco is their family legacy. At only nine years old, he joined his father in a “flamenco puro” show in the United States, where names like Farruco, Fernanda de Utrera, Güito and Chocolate, among others, were present. Officially, Josemi starts his artistic career at the age of 14 when he decides to join Ketama, a group to which he has dedicated over 20 years of his life. In addition to continuing his career as a soloist, he dedicates himself to playing with Javier Colina, António Serrano and Borja Barrueta as a result of a fusion of flamenco and jazz.
His proposal for LEFFEST is a classical flamenco concert in collaboration with Bandolero and Madrid singer Rafika.
The second part of the show brings us an intimate dance performance by Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya, “Farruquito”, considered by The New York Times as the best flamenco dancer of the century. Grandson of “Farruco”, an undeniable flamenco myth, Farruquito began dancing with, as well as for, his grandfather. Farruquito’s first public appearance was on a BBC program at just three years of age. And he kept going: by five he was on Broadway, as part of the show Flamenco Puro, at twelve he danced with his grandfather in the film Flamenco by Carlos Saura, and later, after his grandfather's death in 1997, at only 15 years old, he created his first show, Raíces Flamencas.
Farruquito is considered one of the heirs of pure, classic flamenco. The relationship he maintains with flamenco is truly profound. He does not seek its essence on stage, but finds it through his way of being in the world, his relationship with life and death, and emotions experienced daily. And maybe that’s why Farruquito is praised as one of the only “bailaores" who can truly stop time. His silences stop our hearts, his pauses silence and shake our souls.
