Tivoli BBVA Theatre
Tuesday, November 15, 9pm
The event, moderated by Ines Branco López, will be presented as a conversation between Angela Davis and Gina Dent, open to the audience participation and aiming to foster reflection and the sharing of ideas, and centred on Abolitionism. How to build a society free of prisons, through a feminist, anti-racist, anti-capitalist positioning? Imagination, knowledge, hope and critical thought will be essential notions throughout this meeting, both within this year’s programmes and towards our collective future.
This conversation will mark a unique, emblematic moment within our Breaking the Bars.
For the two authors, talking about the abolition of prisons only makes sense in relation to the concepts of anti-racism, and intersectional feminism - both authors do not identify with the “common” feminist movement, especially when one of the “common” feminist ways to tackle violence against women is imprisonment. Through these intrinsically linked notions, Dent and Davis' answer is presented as a challenge: to think about prison abolition and feminism together. In disapproval of the abolitionist lines that intend to destroy or dismantle, Angela Davis and Gina Dent are clear on one point: the aim is to reconstruct, to remake the concept behind the idea of incarceration.
