One of the greatest actresses in Spanish cinema and theatre of recent decades, Marisa Paredes passed away at the end of last year, leaving behind a legacy of strength and sensitivity.
As part of this celebration, audiences will have the chance to revisit The Flower of My Secret (1995), by Pedro Almodóvar, and Las cartas perdidas (2021), by Amparo Climent. The former features one of Paredes’ most unforgettable performances, as a romance novelist in crisis, unable to continue writing happy endings, a role that earned her the Best Actress Award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The film will be screened at Cinema Nimas on Sunday, November 16th, followed by a conversation with María Isasi (Marisa’s daughter), Chema Prado (her partner), and Manuel Martín Cuenca.
Las cartas perdidas will be screened on November 15th in Room 2 of Cinema São Jorge, with an introduction by María Isasi. It is a hybrid documentary that gives voice to Republican women persecuted and silenced under Franco’s regime, featuring dramatized scenes based on real letters from imprisoned or exiled women, performed by renowned actresses, in a moving tribute to the victims and to historical truth.
As part of the Tribute to Arturo Ripstein, the festival will also screen Deep Crimson (1996) on November 15th, another of Marisa Paredes’ great performances and a masterpiece by the Mexican filmmaker. The session will include a masterclass with Ripstein.
